Our 2009 Komen Portland Race For The Cure promotion with Pottery Barn was a success! Many participants wore their Portland Oregon Race For the Cure event t-shirts into the Washington Square Pottery Barn store and received an instant 10% in store savings.

In 2005, we helped start the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Sherwood. Since 2005, Sherwood, a community of a little over 16,000, has raised over $250,000 for the American Cancer Society. Besides being on the planning committees and also sponsors for both Sherwood and Beaverton’s Relay For Life events, we will also be hosting and organizing in Sherwood our 4th annual benefit egg hunt with all proceeds raised going directly to a local family in need. As personal residents of Sherwood, Oregon, we personally know why it was recently named by Family Circle Magazine as one of the top 10 best towns and cities for families. Sherwood, Oregon, with a population over 16,000 seems to pride it self on many people being local volunteers, family friendly festivals and community events, great schools, tons of walking paths and I could go on and on to name a few. A community that introduced almost 5 years ago an American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event that in only 4 years, has raised over $200,000 for cancer research, education, and advocacy (we are very proud to have been a part of bringing this event to Sherwood, Oregon).
In its August issue, the magazine lists the city as one of the perfect places to call home based on such criteria as affordable housing, good neighbors, green spaces and its public school system.
This now adds to also Sherwood, Oregon being recognized in 2006 as a candidate for an “All American City” ranking and in 2007 Sherwood, Oregon was ranked No. 18 in Money magazine’s “Best Places to Live.” We are not moving.

Relocate Responsibly
If you are striving toward living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, the idea of moving might make you green…with queasiness. All that packing paper, bubble wrap, and those boxes, not to mention the gas guzzled on trips between the old place and the new one, can make it difficult to relocate responsibly.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some tips to make your next move a little easier on the environment.
Reduce
Reducing the amount of stuff you need to move will also reduce the number of boxes and packing materials you’ll need.
Before you start packing, go through your things to make sure you aren’t moving items you no longer need. Old clothes, toys, kitchen gadgets, and anything that has been in your garage more than a year without being touched should be carefully considered before they are tossed in a box.
Recycle
Once you know what you want to get rid of, there are many options for what you can do with those items.
www.craigslist.org and www.freecycle.com are both options for selling or giving away your unwanted items. If you’d rather donate them to a good cause, Goodwill and Salvation Army are both great organizations.
Reuse
Packing materials can be one of the most negatively impactful parts of any move. If you know a move is imminent, start saving newspapers and any box you can find.
Though cardboard boxes and newsprint packing paper are recyclable, a better option would be to take advantage of reusable boxes, such as rubber bins. Better yet, check your local directory for a crate-rental service. These stackable boxes can’t be crushed and are completely reusable.
Your Final Step
Often the last thing that needs to happen before your move is complete is a thorough cleaning of your old home. Using eco-friendly cleaning products is great way to make sure every part of your move is green.
Create your own cleaning solutions using vinegar and warm water or use store-bought cleaners you know are green. Washington-based company Bi-O-Kleen claims to make products that are endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
