Our 2009 Komen Portland Race For The Cure promotion with Pottery Barn was a success! Many participants wore their Portland Oregon Race For the Cure event t-shirts into the Washington Square Pottery Barn store and received an instant 10% in store savings.

In 2005, we helped start the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Sherwood. Since 2005, Sherwood, a community of a little over 16,000, has raised over $250,000 for the American Cancer Society. Besides being on the planning committees and also sponsors for both Sherwood and Beaverton’s Relay For Life events, we will also be hosting and organizing in Sherwood our 4th annual benefit egg hunt with all proceeds raised going directly to a local family in need. Look for future posts as we get closer to the 2010 Easter season for the date and location of our fun and giving back egg hunt event.

Open to the public, The McCabe Real Estate Group is a very proud sponsor of this year’s American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of SHERWOOD. The event kicks off this coming Saturday, August 8TH at Sherwood High School’s track and field, 16956 SW Meinecke Road, Sherwood. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 am with cancer survivors making the first lap symbolizing the start of Sherwood’s 24 hour event. Closing ceremonies will take place at 10 am on Sunday.

During the event, there will be live entertainment, food for sale, activities including a kid’s corner and silent auction. The touching Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 10 pm on Saturday evening. Luminaria bags will be sold up until 8 pm on Saturday for only $5.00 each. They can also be purchased on-line at Sherwood’s website: www.relayforlife.org/sherwoodor. For the past 7 months, I have been given the opportunity to write an article about the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event of Sherwood, Oregon. My article appears in Sherwood, Oregon’s local monthly paper, the Sherwood, Gazette. It has been a great pleasure to have been given the opportunity to provide monthly Relay For Life updates to our Sherwood, Oregon residents. A community of 16,400, in only 4 years, Sherwood, Oregon has raised over $200,000 for the American Cancer Society. We have a huge need for this event. Thank you Sherwood!
How it began… in 2005, the American Cancer Society contacted me to see if I would want to help start a Relay For Life event in Sherwood. The only catch was, we would have 3 months to put it on. I said, “Give me the opportunity and we will go for it.” Our 1st event, raised over $24,000!
For the first 4 Relays in Sherwood, I was the event chair and my husband, Todd was the logistics chair. This past year, I moved into the PR position, with 2 wonderful ladies co-chairing this year’s event (watch their video invitation here).
As the daughter of a father with cancer, and losing my aunt less than 2 years ago to liver cancer, our family is very passionate about raising awareness about this ugly disease. Our two young boys have been raised in an environment to give more, keep less. Even though they are young, they know that helping raise money may someday heal their Papa Eddie or bring no more cancer to children as they have personally met first hand at our local benefit egg hunts that we organize.
So here’s to Relay….may we continue to CELEBRATE, TO FIGHT BACK, and to REMEMBER, those who have one and those who have lost their battle to cancer.

Even though we are a real estate business and our blog is about real estate and community events in and around Sherwood Oregon, we feel it’s important to recognize people “making a difference” in their community or in someone’s life. Meet the Jackson Family.
They are past clients of ours and also participants in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Event of Sherwood, Oregon, an event we are very passionate about and are local volunteers and sponsors of (they are also past sponsors of Sherwood’s event). They are also business owners like we are. Their business, located in SherwoodOregon is called NW Boat Tops. They specialize in making custom canvas tops and covers for boats.
On Monday, April 27th, Michele will be donating one of her kidney’s to her very sick brother. He will die if he doesn’t get a kidney transplant and Michele immediately stepped forward to be the candidate to help her brother have the chance of life.
Michele, you are an amazing lady and we are proud to give you our 1st, “Making a Difference” Award. With this comes a $25 gift card to a store of your choice as our way to say “thank you” for being a positive role model to others.

The American Cancer Society’s RelayforLife is their signature fundraising event. Todd and Leslie have been involved in the Relay for Life event since the early 90’s so in 2005 when Leslie was asked to help start a Relay for Life event in Sherwood, Oregon she took on that challenge.
With only 3 months to plan it, the event raised over $20,000 for the American Cancer Society. Since the start of Sherwood’s Relay for Life event, Leslie was the event chair and Todd the logistics chair. For Sherwood’s 5th relay, Leslie is now doing pr and marketing and Todd is taking a break from being on the planning committee.

To help find a cure for Leslie’s father, a prostate cancer survivor who introduced Todd and Leslie to Salem, Oregon’s Relay for Life event. Her father, Ed Kuenzi is an amazing voice for all prostate cancer survivors. He represented ACS in Washington DC and in the early 90’s formed with his wife Marcy, a Prostate Cancer Support Group in Salem Oregon. They have helped hundreds of families with issues related to prostate cancer and how to live through it, to face it. Just recently, they were selected by Salem Hospital to be featured as a “real story” and “real people” making a difference in their community. Bravo mom and dad!
