Please Don’t Drink And Drive: Call A Friend Or A Cab

filed under: Real People Real Stories, Real Stories, Relay for Life Beaverton posted on June 4th, 2011

Please Don’t Drink And Drive: Call A Friend Or A Cab. This is so very personal to me….Today in Sherwood, Oregon we are going to have sunshine. In fact in Oregon, in some parts of our beautiful state we are going to finally hit maybe  80 degrees. I am already up. In fact, I woke up to Todd’s alarm at 4:30 am because my hard working husband is finally taking a few hours to go play at the Oregon Coast, something he rarely does because we both are Oregon real estate brokers for John L. Scott and most of you already know, for us, that is a 7 day a week job for our family just to survive in this economy.  So today, with great weather, he is up early and off to the beautiful Oregon Coast to participate  in an annual “clam Dig” with our John L. Scott Market Center “family.”  Me being a morning person, I got up as well excited to start my day happy to know Todd will be finally getting to relax a little and to go dig clams with our JLS friends. Grabbed my cup of coffee, my iPhone and I see I have an email from one of my Relay For Life Besties. Thinking this is one of her awesome inspirational, high energy emails  about today’s Beaverton’s Relay For Life  yard sale, I start to read her email  and instead, it’s pure devastation. A nightmare my parents went through when I was a baby. Her email states that yesterday her mother was in a head on collision and was hit by a drunk driver.  She is in critical conditon and had to be cut out of her car and life flighted to the hospital. Her injuries are very serious with mulitple fractures to her legs. She has already been in surgery with now numerous ones ahead of her. Her mom, already fragile, now has a painful road ahead of her just because someone decided to make a poor choice on one of our first beautiful sunny days here in the Portland tri-county area and drove drunk. Here is the link to yesterday’s drunk driving accident: http://www.kptv.com/news/28129050/detail.html.

How can I relate? You see my father’s brother, my Uncle Karl, was killed when I was only a baby, by a drunk driver in a head on collision. His wife was with him and she was expecting their first child. My Uncle died and sadly my cousin never got to know his dad as I never got to know my Uncle. So reading Kathy’s email asking for prayers for her family brought chills down my spine as  if only that driver would have called a friend or taken a cab instead of getting behind the steering wheel,  her mother would be ok, Kathy would be helping raise money for the American Cancer Society today at her event’s huge yard sale and I would have been energized by one of Kathy’s awesome high energy relay emails.

She needs all the positive energy sent her way so if you can take a moment, think of Kathy and her husband and young daughter, her mother and her father, and let’s pray that her mom will recover from this terrible accident.  Let’s pray that next week when her parents were to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary, that her mother will be starting to heal and that her mom and dad will be able to celebrate it, even if it is from her hospital room.

So if you are an Oregonian like I am,  and are going to enjoy today’s well needed sunshine, please drink wisely and please don’t drink and drive. Call a cab or a friend or just walk….the weather is perfect for that today here in Sherwood, Oregon.

Relay For Life of Beaverton Just Around the Corner

The Relay for Life of Beaverton would like to welcome the public to come be a part of an amazing event where we CELEBRATE our survivors, REMEMBER those we have lost to cancer and never stop FIGHTING BACK to help stop this disease.

Your opportunity to FIGHT BACK at the Relay for Life of Beaverton is just around the corner. Mark your calendars to stop by on Saturday August 1st and enjoy the wonderful music, silent auction, food and activities while cheering on the local teams. Open to the public, the Relay kicks off on Saturday, August 1st at 10 am with the Survivor Lap and concludes at 10 am on Sunday morning at Valley Catholic High School’s Track and Field located at Valley Catholic High School 4275 SW 148th Ave. Beaverton.
If you are not familiar with the Relay for Life, it is a community based, volunteer driven event. As the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams (made up of 8 to 15 people) camp out at Valley Catholic High School’s track taking turns walking or running around the track. When they are not on the track, they can participate in fun activities and enjoy local entertainment. During Beaverton’s 24-hour event, each team is asked to
have a representative on the track at all times since cancer never sleeps. It’s not too late to register a team. Go to www.relayforlife.org/beavertonor and click on “sign up”. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Beaverton’s Team Development Chair, Kristine Miles at krismiles@aol.com to answer any of your team questions. You can also attend the next team training meeting on Thursday, July 9th, from 7-8 pm at Pacific Oncology (the corner of 158th and SW Walker Rd. in Beaverton).
Beaverton’s event goal is 30 teams, raise $54,000 and to have at least 30 cancer survivors walk our 1st lap at opening ceremonies while we honor them. Cancer survivors are encouraged to register on line at our event,
www.relayforlife.org/beavertonor and will receive a free purple survivor t-shirt and are also invited to attend a special complimentary survivor luncheon following opening ceremonies. If you are a cancer survivor and would like more information about Beaverton’s Relay For Life event, please contact either Jeanie Zamarripa, jeaniez@oneboz.com or Tami Martin, mrttami@aol.com, survivor co-chairs.

The Luminaria Ceremony, a ceremony of celebration and remembrance, starts at 10 pm on Saturday. Luminaria bags are being sold for only $5.00 each and can be bought on-line at Beaverton’s website below and at the event up until 8 pm. Go to the website and click on Purchase a Luminaria.

The ceremony, like the event, is open to the public and is a touching and emotional time to many at Relay. Luminaria bags will be lit up with tea lights and will line the entire Valley Catholic High School track. The bags remain lit until the early morning hours giving participants and visitors the chance to look at the decorated bags honoring those who have won, those who are still fighting, and those who have lost their battle with cancer.

Meet June’s Making A Difference Recipient

filed under: Community Events, Making A Difference Award, Relay for Life Beaverton posted on June 6th, 2009

This month’s McCabe Real Estate Group’s “Making A Difference” award goes to Charlotte (since she is only 3 years old, for privacy purposes we will only use her cute 1st nickname.)

Though Charlotte is only 3, she is already making a difference by raising money for the American Cancer Society through their Relay For Life event.

The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event and has raised an estimated $420 million nationwide since 1985. It is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate cancer survivors, raise awareness of cancer issues, provide cancer education, and raise money for the American Cancer Society. During the event, team members take turns walking, or running around the track for 24 hours, because cancer never sleeps.

For the past two years, Charlotte has been “co-captain” on her team. She has also raised over $1,000 and is a member of the Relay For Life’s $1,000 club. This year Charlotte has already raised over $1,000 for her team that is participating in the Relay For Life of Beaverton.

For her 3rd birthday, instead of presents, she asked for donations to be made to the American Cancer Society.

As this month’s recipient of the McCabe Real Estate’s Group’s “Making a Difference Award” winner, Charlotte receives a $25.00 gift card. I bet you know where we donated the $25.00?!

If you would like to donate to Charlotte’s Relay For Life team, please click here. Thank you Charlotte for “Making a Difference” in your community.

If you know of anyone making a different in your community in or around Sherwood Oregon (Beaverton, Aloha, Tualatin, Newberg, Hillsboro, Wilsonville, Forest Grove, Cornelius, Lake Oswego and West Linn Oregon or the Portland Oregon Metro area, please let us know. If they are selected, we will feature them on our blog and they will also receive a $25 gift card or donation to the charity of their choice.

The McCabe Real Estate Group is very involved in their community as well as surrounding communities in and Sherwood, Oregon. Watch our video brochure and get to know us a little better.
