Please Don’t Drink And Drive: Call A Friend Or A Cab. This is so very personal to me….Today in Sherwood, Oregon we are going to have sunshine. In fact in Oregon, in some parts of our beautiful state we are going to finally hit maybe 80 degrees. I am already up. In fact, I woke up to Todd’s alarm at 4:30 am because my hard working husband is finally taking a few hours to go play at the Oregon Coast, something he rarely does because we both are Oregon real estate brokers for John L. Scott and most of you already know, for us, that is a 7 day a week job for our family just to survive in this economy. So today, with great weather, he is up early and off to the beautiful Oregon Coast to participate in an annual “clam Dig” with our John L. Scott Market Center “family.” Me being a morning person, I got up as well excited to start my day happy to know Todd will be finally getting to relax a little and to go dig clams with our JLS friends. Grabbed my cup of coffee, my iPhone and I see I have an email from one of my Relay For Life Besties. Thinking this is one of her awesome inspirational, high energy emails about today’s Beaverton’s Relay For Life yard sale, I start to read her email and instead, it’s pure devastation. A nightmare my parents went through when I was a baby. Her email states that yesterday her mother was in a head on collision and was hit by a drunk driver. She is in critical conditon and had to be cut out of her car and life flighted to the hospital. Her injuries are very serious with mulitple fractures to her legs. She has already been in surgery with now numerous ones ahead of her. Her mom, already fragile, now has a painful road ahead of her just because someone decided to make a poor choice on one of our first beautiful sunny days here in the Portland tri-county area and drove drunk. Here is the link to yesterday’s drunk driving accident: http://www.kptv.com/news/28129050/detail.html.
How can I relate? You see my father’s brother, my Uncle Karl, was killed when I was only a baby, by a drunk driver in a head on collision. His wife was with him and she was expecting their first child. My Uncle died and sadly my cousin never got to know his dad as I never got to know my Uncle. So reading Kathy’s email asking for prayers for her family brought chills down my spine as if only that driver would have called a friend or taken a cab instead of getting behind the steering wheel, her mother would be ok, Kathy would be helping raise money for the American Cancer Society today at her event’s huge yard sale and I would have been energized by one of Kathy’s awesome high energy relay emails.
She needs all the positive energy sent her way so if you can take a moment, think of Kathy and her husband and young daughter, her mother and her father, and let’s pray that her mom will recover from this terrible accident. Let’s pray that next week when her parents were to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary, that her mother will be starting to heal and that her mom and dad will be able to celebrate it, even if it is from her hospital room.
So if you are an Oregonian like I am, and are going to enjoy today’s well needed sunshine, please drink wisely and please don’t drink and drive. Call a cab or a friend or just walk….the weather is perfect for that today here in Sherwood, Oregon.

This past year was the McCabe Real Estate Group’s 4th Annual Benefit Egg Hunt. All money raised goes to a local family in need. This past year, our egg hunt was for our good friend Del Clark. As many of you know, Del was a past Sherwood Chamber President, on City Council, a husband, and father. He was also a cancer survivor. Todd and I met Del through Sherwood’s Relay For Life event back in 2005. He was well known at our event. And how could you not miss him? Standing at 6 ft 7 inches tall and also bald, Del always walked with the other cancer survivors making the1st lap that would kick off Sherwood’s Relay For Life event. He was one of our key survivor participants and event supporters.
It’s with great sadness that on Friday, September 24th, after a year long battle with brain cancer and short bout with colon cancer, Del lost his life to this ugly disease. His memorial (please be patient as his memorial information is on this page and wait for it to scroll back around) will be held on Sunday, at 2pm at Sherwood High School.
He will be sadly missed in so many ways in our community of Sherwood, Oregon.
